1 Kings Part 2: Resist The Drift | Pastor David Hermes
This Sunday, we reflected on the story in 1 Kings 12:8–11 and the important lesson it teaches about the voices we choose to listen to. When King Rehoboam became ruler, the people asked him to lighten the heavy burdens that had been placed on them. He first received wise counsel from the older advisors who had served his father, encouraging him to respond with humility and compassion. However, Rehoboam rejected their advice and instead listened to the younger voices around him who urged him to rule with even greater harshness.
Because he chose pride and power over wisdom and humility, his decision led to division among the people of Israel. This moment reminds us how powerful our choices can be—especially when it comes to the counsel we accept and the attitude we bring to leadership and relationships.
Through this story, we’re reminded that wisdom often calls us toward humility, patience, and care for others, even when pride pushes us in the opposite direction. God invites us to seek wise guidance and to lead our lives in ways that reflect humility rather than control.
Our hope is that this message encourages you to consider whose voices are shaping your decisions and to seek wisdom that leads to unity, humility, and faithfulness.
